DMBS 51455 calls at Barnsley with the 11:10 Sheffield - Leeds in 1988, presumably paired with 51538. It appears to have been recently transferred from Scotland, it having the remnants of a 101xxx TOPS unit number visible below the driver's front window, plus it appears to have had some lettering painted out behind the driver's door, probably TransClyde or ScotRail. Graeme Phillips Collection.
A Sheffield-Huddersfield via Barnsley sevice formed of a class 108/101 hybrid dmu, passes the site of the once extensive Barnsley Junction just East of Penistone on the 11th July 1987. Once part of the Woodhead Route, the trackbed to the right with a few gantries left was the mainline through Deepcar to Sheffield, which remained in use until 15th May 1983 when the Sheffield-Huddersfield trains were diverted via Barnsley. The last electrically hauled train passed through here just before 5am on the 18th July 1981 and was the 6M10 Harwich-Trafford Park Speedlink hauled by 76010 and 76016. Andrew J Crowther.
