A pair of Newton Heath Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin DMU's were forming a Manchester Victoria to Kirkby service awaiting departure from Bolton on an overcast June 23rd 1979. Bringing up the rear complete with its paraffin tail-lamp was Driving Motor Brake Second M50771. The Power-Twin fleet were a familiar sight around Greater Manchester and Lancashire at the time, and the Preston to Colne service was virtually monopolised by these distinctive machines. A ride on a Power-Twin was an experience never to be forgotten. Pale green formica interiors, curvy-backed seats, and every imaginable metal item from the luggage racks, window frames and door surrounds would vibrate to various degrees depending on the engine speed. They had comfortable seating and a smell of warm diesel throughout each car. They were though to be quite rough and ready at the time, well-worn, but far superior to what was to follow, that promised so much (Class 142 Pacers). Martyn Hilbert.
