Class 120 DMU at Leyland

25th August 1984

A hybrid Class 120 3-Car set with Driving Motor Brake Second M53702 leading, was departing from Leyland with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on August 25th 1984. The centre trailer coach was from a Class 110 Calder Valley set. A number of the 110 sets had been reformed to 2-Car units in 1982, making the centre cars spare. Martyn Hilbert.

Class 120 DMU at Cocker Bar

29th June 1985

A hybrid Class 120 three-car set with DMBS M53702 and including a centre trailer coach from a Class 101, passes the Orchard at the rear of Cocker Bar Farm as it runs between Midge Hall and Croston whilst working the 17.55 Preston to Ormskirk service on June 29th 1985. This particular service was diagrammed for a Class 120 set that was usually employed on Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North workings, and had a tea-time out and back run on the Ormskirk route. (The destination blind is still showing Blackpool North). These were the days when the passing loop was utilised at Rufford and an intensive service was used at the late afternoon/early evening peak, when four different DMU sets were used on the Preston to Ormskirk services. The Central Wales Line used to be operated with pairs of class 120 "Cross Country" motor coaches fitted with headlights (at a time this was unusual in Britain) because of the numerous level crossing on the line. The photo was taken on a circular "Central Wales roundabout" ticket which allowed one to travel from London to Swansea, Shrewsbury (via the Central Wales) and back to London (or v.v) for a bargain fare. I imagine this was taken (at Llanwrtyd Wells on September 16, 1978, presumably 50664 + 50702) while waiting for another train to cross. The line, from Llanelli to Craven Arms, is now known as the Heart of Wales line. Jeremy Chapter.
