A view along the then double track Ormskirk route on Farington Moss with a Class 104 on the 11.55 Ormskirk to Preston service on a warm May 11th 1981. The two-car DMU is running between the occupation crossings at Naptha Lane and Lodge Lane, the then full-height chimney at the former Moss's Cotton Mill in Lostock Hall is prominent in this flat landscape. A two-car Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53421 & M53529, was heading over Farington Moss on its way towards Midge Hall with a Preston to Ormskirk service on January 14th 1988. As a nod to its past life at Buxton Depot, the Driving Motor Brake Second M53421 had received a customised white cab roof. Alongside the unit are remnants of the former Up Line that was taken out of use in 1983, and removed piecemeal from Farington Curve Junction to Midge Hall until the early 1990's. Martyn Hilbert.

A two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53427 and presumably M53474 was topping the climb from Farington Curve Junction at Lodge Lane on Farington Moss with a Preston to Ormskirk service on March 4th 1988. The partly dismantled former Up Line, taken of use in 1983 is visible alongside the 104. To the right of the this view was the site of the former Moss Lane Junction. Until 1972 there was a useful connecting double track link from the Ormskirk Line to Lostock Hall on the East Lancashire line which once enabled trains to run direct from Liverpool to East Lancashire. The link was the also the route that most stopping Preston to Ormskirk/Liverpool Exchange services used, via the now dismantled East Lancashire 'Preston Extension' via Todd Lane Junction. With the passage of time, this once open view is now completely tree-lined. Martyn Hilbert.

Having climbed the gradient from Farington Curve Junction on the WCML, a two-car Class 104/108 hybrid DMU formed of cars M53501 & M53934 was passing Lodge Lane Crossing on Farington Moss with a lunchtime Preston to Ormskirk service on January 7th 1988. In the foreground is the part dismantled former Up Line that was taken out of use in 1983, prior to which double track had been retained from Farington Curve Junction to Midge Hall. The DMU is passing through the site of the one-time Moss Lane Junction, where until 1972 there was a direct link from the Ormskirk route that connected with the East Lancashire line at the top of Farington Curve.
