The Midland Railway station in Lincoln was St Marks, where a Swindon dmu is preparing to depart westwards from platform 1 with a three car train on 31st May 1978. Traffic on the level crossing can be seen in the right background. The line used to connect with the Great Northern line at Durham Ox Junction east of Central Station. Opened in 1846 the station closed completely in May 1985 when a new passenger line was opened between the Midland route & the Great Northern line into Lincoln Central station. This greatly relieved the traffic congestion in the city along High Street. However with the opening of a shopping complex on the site in the 1990s no doubt the traffic is even worse now. At least the main station building was not demolished but incorprated into this complex. Pete LG99.

31st May 1978

The Midland Railway station in Lincoln was St Marks. A dmu from Nottingham heads eastwards past the typical Midland signal box into St Marks on 31st May 1978. DMU

31st May 1978

Diesel multiple units (a Class 114 on the left, Class 120 on the right) stand in the former Midand Railway station at Lincoln St Marks on 31st May 1978 still fully semaphore signalled and complete with classic MR signal box. We had arrived on the 114 which is now signalled to return to Newark. Transfer between the two platforms was via a boarded crossing so despite appearances I am not in a position of danger! Through freight trains still ran beyond the High Street level crossing behind the camera. Opened in 1846 and closed in 1985, today St Marks is a shopping centre and although the station building has been incorporated into the complex little evidence of the railway's presence remains. Pete LG99.

3rd May 1985

Set: EP519

Lincoln St Marks station on 3 May 1985, during a day out with my old friend Mike Chinnock, just a couple of weeks before it ceased operation. It shows a class 120 with an arrival from Derby and which was about to return to the same town. Also of interest is the red GPO vehicle on the platform which were a common sight at one time but have long been consigned to history, and a red Honda C50 Scooterette, very similar to my first motor vehicle! Peter Tandy.
