Southall Shed on the 30th of May 1965 and a wide variety to see, a single car Pressed Steel DMU, 9F's 92240 (now preserved on the Bluebell) and 92250, Grange 6849 Walton Grange, Manor 7829 Ramsbury Manor and a 350hp shunter. The KDH Archive.
Vehicle: 56283 Set: L283
W56283 - one of the Class 121 unpowered trailer cars that were used with the Bubble Cars to provide extra capacity - seen at the back of Southall shed, circa 1983. Chris McKee.
Vehicle: 55034
A view of a busy Southall shed taken from W55034 operating a Brentford Branch Special. Back in the 1980s, the Great Western Railway Preservation Group (GWRPG), which was based in the old Otto Monsted margarine factory next to Southall station, would run shuttles on the freight-only Brentford branch on Bank Holidays. On one such day, Easter Sunday in 1984, I took the opportunity to ride down this rare freight branch in one of the classic and versatile Class 121 'Bubble Cars' W55034. The scene here was taken just after leaving the station, and shows a clear view of the old eight-road Southall shed (81C) which was hosting a number of units (including one of the unique Class 210s) and a couple of shunters. A rare branch line was about to be traversed! Chris McKee.
Vehicle: 975023 Set: B101
TDB975023 - a visiting Gloucester Railway Carriage & Wagon Company Limited Class 122 Suburban diesel-mechanical railcar seen stabled in my then local shed at Southall. The unit was once W55001 but was transferred to departmental service after early withdrawal in 1969. The B101 code indicates the vehicle was based at Bristol Bath Road. Another "bubble car" sits behind. I would have been on one of my frequent 'after school' visits to Southall footbridge to do a bit of train-spotting. Sometimes I would venture down to the trackside, as in this shot, and even bunk round the shed as on this occasion. At this time, in the early to mid 1970s, Southall shed still had the ambience of an old steam shed, with the old smoke extractors still in place on the roof. Chris McKee.
Vehicle: 50083 Set: L360
This is the scene at the back of Southall shed, where we can see two of the spare DMU vehicles that were used at the time, replacing damaged Class 117 Pressed Steel cars. Class 116 W50083 was the only one of the class that worked out of Paddington and W59543 was one of only three Met Cams - all centre cars - both seen in this shot, along with W55991 one of the two allocated Class 128 parcels units. I would have been on one of my frequent 'after school' visits to Southall footbridge to do a bit of train-spotting, circa early to mid 1970s. Sometimes I would venture down to the trackside, as in this shot, and even bunk round the shed as on this occasion. I used to like 'running the gauntlet' to try and get to the back of the shed, and then wend my way back slowly so I could 'cop' as many units on the walk back before I got thrown out ;) There was often a collection of interesting stray vehicles stored at the back of the shed, as seen in this view. Chris McKee.
A Park Royal Class 103 DMU seen around the back of Southall shed circa 1974. Note both route indicator blinds display letters. Chris McKee.
A number of Class 117 DMUs can be seen in this view of Southall depot on 9 July 1973. Alistair Ness.

Vehicle: 50083
Class 116 DMBS stabled on its own at the east end of Southall shed, date unknown. Paul Redmond.
Vehicle: 55024 Set: L124
Class 121 W55024 on Southall depot on 8 January 1979. Brian Daniels.
Vehicle: 51404 Set: L424
Southall Depot on 11 January 1979 contains a bubble car, Class 128 and numerous 117s. The one on the right seems to be set L424 presumably W51404, the way the light is catching all the commode handles gives the impression it is in blue/grey livery. Brian Daniels.
Vehicle: 51390
