Whitby on the 24th April 1977. Nearest the camera are cars 50188 and 50162, each unit still unrefurbished at this stage, retaining all four front lights. The unit on the left appears to be 4-cars. Plenty of history in this image, with orange BR NER signage, station accessories / equipment plus all the tracks into the station terminus are still intact. With diminishing services, the station was later rationalised to just the single track on the left. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Cars E53262 E59075 E53150 wait at Whitby to return to Darlington via Middlesbrough, sometime in 1984. With their day out at the seaside drawing to a close, the steady stream of boarding passengers slam the heavy doors behind them and locate a comfortable but springy seat. There is a distinctive smell, and windows and other fittings vibrate as the engines idle. As departure time comes, the guard buzzes to the driver to move off, and the train slowly pulls away through the gears, to set off on a scenic journey of 35 miles to Middlesbrough, which, with 15 intermediate stops including reversal at Battersby, will take almost 90 minutes. A Class 101 at Whitby in October 1978. Still unrefurbished and in blue livery, this unit has just arrived from Middlesbrough. Plenty of history in this image, with orange BR NER signage, station accessories / equipment plus all the tracks into the station terminus are still intact. With diminishing services, the station was later rationalised to just the single track on the left. However, the platform at which this unit is standing was restored to use in 2014 for NYMR services. Car E50250 is seen at Whitby awaiting return to Middlesbrough on 05/09/1977. It is in the platform that was taken out of use, but has since been restored to use for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Graeme Phillips Collection.

1964
Class 101 DMUs at Whitby Town in 1964. A busy scene, with three Class 101 units, plus loco-hauled stock is also visible behind the middle unit. At this time, Whitby was still linked to Scarborough, albeit requiring reversals at either end of the route to leave / access the stations, but this coastal route closed the following year, 1965. All three Met-Camms have different width of yellow panels. The set on the right is formed DMS/TBS/DMS. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Whitby station on July 21st, 1958. Less than a month old, E50605 (presumably with 56196) is at the front of the 5.40pm Whitby - Middlesbrough service, formed of a two-car 108 and two-car 101. They are awaiting the arrival of the 4.25pm ex-Scarborough before they depart as a combined train. Michael Mensing.

A Met cam 101 dmu leaves Whitby for Middlesbrough on 7/4/1980. The DMS is E50262, the number of the DMBS is part obscured by the signal, E51*05 is visible, it is almost certainly 51205. Stephen Burdett.

A station full of Met-Camms. Whitby Town contains at least four sets. The driver-trailer set on the right is in the darker green, the revised lining shows that the DMBS has been repainted at Doncaster. It's partner seems to have thicker than normal lining. No date, but the yellow panels everywhere suggest the mid to late-1960s. David Faircloth.
