A Class 101 arrives at Darlington in 1979. Although a rather grainy slide, careful inspection reveals an unusual Tyne & Wear Transport logo just behind the secondman's door. It also appears there may be one on the rear car in the same position. Graeme Phillips Collection.

The 2 northern bay platforms at Darlington, by then just used by Darlington to Bishop Auckland trains, were done away with, one infilled for car parking and the other by the realignment of the down line out of Platform 4. The Bishop Auckland service was extended as through workings to and from Saltburn (or Whitby). The 08 in the background is 08004, the short little bay that the 08 often stood in between station pilot duties is long gone now too. John Carter.

On September 12, 1981, E51301 + E56464 depart Darlington with the 11:55 to Hartlepool. Until the mid 1980s there was an hourly service between Darlington and Hartlepool which used to carry a lot of students to Stockton and Billingham tech near Billingham station. Due the shortage of trains with the shortcomings of the new Pacers, the Hartlepool service was replaced by buses. The service was never reinstated apart from a token two trains each way on a Sunday. John Carter.
