The last of the Newton Heath allocated 'White Stripe' with red buffer beam liveried class 104 BRC&W dmu's - DMCL M53524 - makes a smoky departure upon leaving what is now a totally unrecognizable Manchester Victoria with a service for Blackpool North. These units with a White Strip down the body side indicated that they had modified suspension for fast running on express services to Blackpool, which probably meant very little when i took this with the influx of class 150 'Sprinter' new builds. 18th May 1985 Andrew J Crowther.

Having arrived with 2H40 the 15.26 from Greenbank this Derby Lightweight class 108 DMU set is seen in the London Road platforms at Manchester Piccadilly on 16 June 1985. The driver is changing ends swiftly before working the set away a few minutes late as 2D45 the 16.25 to Chester. Adrian Nicholls.

The reason I took this at the time is because it was the only BRC&W vehicle, definitely in the Northwest, that still retained its original two-figure route indicator which necessitated the use of a tail lamp, as seen here. Seen leaving Manchester Victoria ECS after arrival from Liverpool, allocated to Newton Heath M53428 was withdrawn a few months later. 13th July 1985. Andrew J Crowther.
