Yet another night without the comfort of a bed and the station clock confirms my dedication or stupidity, at 01:22 am. Longsight-allocated class 108 DMU Nos.54489-51906 on the Chester shuttle and Gateshead-allocated 47431 alongside on a parcels working at Crewe on 21st May 1985. Introduced into BR service on 1st January 1962 as D1545 and allocated to 41A Darnall. Unlike many class 47s this example only carried the two numbers, but carried three liveries, namely two-tone green, BR blue, and large logo blue with grey roof. Given the unofficial name of 'Silurian' when at Tinsley in November 1990, she was withdrawn in August 1992 and disposed of by MRJ Phillips at Old Oak Common MPD in April 1997. Gordon Edgar.

A Class 108 Derby Lightweight 2-Car DMU with M51909 leading, has just passed over the level crossing at Midge Hall with the 11.39 Preston to Ormskirk service on May 30th 1985. The end of the disused former Up line out of use since 1983 is visible on the right. The pointwork had been removed and plain track inserted in its place. Following rationalisation of the route in 1970, double track was retained from Farington Curve Junction to Midge Hall. Martyn Hilbert.
With the driver having just collected the single line token from the signal box, a two-car Derby Class 108 DMU formed of cars M51565 & M53925 was getting underway from Midge Hall with a Preston to Ormskirk service on June 1st 1985. Martyn Hilbert.
A busy scene at York on 5th June 1985, as passengers hurry along the platform to board a gurgling four-car DMU with Newton Heath-allocated hybrid Class 104 (DMBS) 53463 & Class 108 (DMCL) 52041 leading the formation. The driver is at the head of the 'convoy' of passengers, with his polystyrene cup of British Rail tea and the guard unloads parcels from the luggage area of the Class 104. Standing alongside is Hull Botanic Gardens-allocated Class 108 (DTCL) 54207. Gordon Edgar.
Back in the days when Shrewsbury had a very active night shift with numerous van trains and postal services seeing as it was the interchange between several principle routes. Stratford-upon-Avon used to be the destination for many special trains although the number of such workings has lessened in recent years. This picture shows one of these, the Poynton Parish Puffa, standing in the long-gone "cold store" sidings on 29 June 1985. This train was formed of class 108+104 combination (closest being BX496, presumably 51947/59155/52062, the other was BX480, presumably 53420/59152/53474) and, obviously enough I suppose, ran from Poynton in Cheshire, which incidentally is a very attractively decorated station, adorned with many enamel advertisements. Having just collected the single line token for the run to Rufford, a two-car Class 108 DMU formed of M53925 & M51565 was getting underway from Midge Hall with a Preston to Ormskirk service on July 4th 1985. The track on the right is the former Up line that was taken out of use between Farington Curve Junction and Midge Hall in 1983. When the Ormskirk line was rationalised in 1970 double track was retained as far as Midge Hall. Martyn Hilbert.

Two unidentified Buxton "White Roofed" allocated Derby built class 108 dmu's leave New Mills Central, with a 6 car Summer Sunday only Peak Rail Rambler service to Buxton, this working was normally in the hands of a 3 car unit. 7th July 1985. Just about in view is the New Mills turn back tunnel, as we called it as it was used to turn back the 2 car dmus back to Manchester, is Buxton "White Roofed" allocated BRC&W dmu BX482.
