It is 10.10pm by the station clock and the fume-filled York station is captured during a brief period of inactivity as Lincoln-allocated and Derby 1956-built class 114 unit No.50006-56036 gurgles away in the bay platform 11 forming a late-evening stopping service to Sheffield on 26th November 1981. My overnight on the station was just unfolding with much action to be witnessed over the next 10 hours! Gordon Edgar.

Wednesday 16th December 1981 began very foggy, there's also been some snow and it's frozen hard. A two car 114 DMU emerges from the fog at Mountsorrel Sidings, Barrow upon Soar working the 1230 Nottingham - Leicester local service. These were great units, based at Lincoln with extremely good heaters & a nice long 'bed' in their 3 + 2 seating arrangement although the blue check upholstery fabric could chafe your face so I always tried to sleep on my back.
