South Wales valleys line bashing - Maytime and it's snowing quite heavily! This is set C451 (presumably 51380 + 59371 + 51338) at Rhymney on 2 May 1979. This pic was taken less than an hour after I had been at Coryton in 70 degree heat. Alistair Ness.

On the first day of WR dmmu operation - 12 May 1979, L433 (presumably 51413 + 59478 + 51371) arrives at Edenbridge. Despite the destination blind, it is heading for Tonbridge. Tony Watson.

When the 3R Tadpole DEMUs were withdrawn, the intended substitutes were Class 101 Metro-Cammell dmmus. In the event, only a couple of these put in an appearance and the Class 119 Gloucester Cross-country sets took over. However, in the first few weeks after the supposed changeover, a mixture of WR and Southern units appeared. Here, L400 (presumably 51374 + 59484 + 51332) in white livery arrives at Edenbridge on 14 May 1979 with up train. Tony Watson.

L434 (W51414 closest, presumably with Class 118 TCL 59479 + 51372) at Cookham on the 26th June 1979 in the short lived blue stripe livery. 54A South Dock.

Class 117 DMU set L406 led by W51341 departs from London Paddington station on Thursday 28 June 1979. David Russon.

On 21 July 1979 the RCTS and Southern Electric Group "Marchwood Volunteer No. 2" railtour is seen at Bedenham Siding. Set L416 was formed 51353 + 59505 + 51395 all in "blue band" livery. This set, built by Pressed Steel in 1960, ended its life in Scotland in the 1990s. Jeremy Chapter.

3H diesel electric unit 1102 is seen at Fareham on 21 July 1979 with an unidentified service to Portsmouth while a strange visitor in the bay is Western Region Pressed Steel (class 117) unit L416 working the SEG/RCTS "Marchwood Volunteer No 2" rail tour from London Waterloo. Jeremy Chapter.

On 21 July 1979, the RCTS/Southern Electric Group "Marchwood Volunteer No 2" rail tour, formed of class 117 Pressed Steel suburban coaches 51395+59505+51353 is seen at the "Model Room" platform at Marchwood, Hampshire. The DMU was built in 1960. Jeremy Chapter.

The unusual sight of a Class 117 DMU in Derby station on 24-7-79, set L417 (51354 + 59506 + 51396). Note the 'cut' buffers. It seems to have passengers on board, and is paired with a Class 104. Behind on the same road is a Class 120, and other Class 120 to the right with part of M50731 visible. Ian Cuthbertson Collection.
