On the first day of WR dmmu operation - 12 May 1979, L433 (presumably 51413 + 59478 + 51371) arrives at Edenbridge. Despite the destination blind, it is heading for Tonbridge. Tony Watson.
When the 3R Tadpole DEMUs were withdrawn, the intended substitutes were Class 101 Metro-Cammell dmmus. In the event, only a couple of these put in an appearance and the Class 119 Gloucester Cross-country sets took over. However, in the first few weeks after the supposed changeover, a mixture of WR and Southern units appeared. Here, L400 (presumably 51374 + 59484 + 51332) in white livery arrives at Edenbridge on 14 May 1979 with up train. Tony Watson.

On 21 July 1979 the RCTS and Southern Electric Group "Marchwood Volunteer No. 2" railtour is seen at Bedenham Siding. Set L416 was formed 51353 + 59505 + 51395 all in "blue band" livery. This set, built by Pressed Steel in 1960, ended its life in Scotland in the 1990s. Jeremy Chapter.

The unusual sight of a Class 117 DMU in Derby station on 24-7-79, set L417 (51354 + 59506 + 51396). Note the 'cut' buffers. It seems to have passengers on board, and is paired with a Class 104.
