Seen on the Down Relief line, arriving in Platform 3 Ealing Broadway with a Paddington to Reading service. Part of station improvements taking place at the time, the very fresh and clean platform block paving and concrete edging on Platform 4 is very noticeable in the foreground. Alistair Fyffe.

M51394 was one of the last of her class in service making it into Regional Railway colours. Andrew J Crowther.

DMU's new & old were stood in Croft Street Sidings adjacent to Preston Power Box on August 28th 1988. Left to right, a shiny new Metro-Cammell built Class 156 Sprinter 156430, with Blue/Grey liveried BRCW Class 104 M53534 stood alongside, and on the right, a Pressed Steel built Class 117, with DMBS M51372 nearest the camera. Never a common sight in the Preston area, several of these West Midlands sets were on temporary loan to Newton Heath during this period when problems with the Class 142 fleet was causing stock shortages. Martyn Hilbert.

There was a diesel gala at the Severn Valley Railway in October 1988 and amongst all the locomotive-hauled trains was the chocolate and cream class 117 DMU T305 (51410 + 59520 + 51368). I suspect that fewer photographs were taken of this train than any of the others but I thought it well worth recording. It had just left Bewdley and was heading towards Bridgnorth although the destination board says "Kidderminster". I can't imagine that many of the roller blinds in use at the time had either Bewdley of Bridgnorth available for use! Note the symbol on the former headcode panel showing the Bear and Ragged Staff, this being the emblem of Warwickshire. Peter Tandy.
This is probably an LMR publicity image. The caption on the rear states "Three of the fitters up in the 'pit' ready to give a set the routine once over. L/R Kevin Bisset (Fitter), M.R. Mirza (Asst Fitter), Bob Anderson (Electrician)." I'm guessing this is Tyseley, and the date is circa October 1988 as the date on the set board in the Class 117 window is 11.01.88. British Railways.
