A pair of two-car 117s at Edinburgh (Waverley) on 12/10/99, 117 311 (presumably 51352 + 51376) nearer and 117 308 (presumably 51413 + 51371) further away on the 10.20 to Cowdenbeath. The Haymarket 117s had their centre cars removed to reduce weight in an attempt to improve their reliability, but this was not a success and they were withdrawn soon after this photo was taken. Kenneth Leiper.

Two days before Christmas in 1999 and the depot yard at Haymarket is full of second generation units of classes 150, 156 and 158, with new Turbostars in their National Express ScotRail livery in the background. Sitting forlornly in the centre sidings are the last of Haymarket's first generation DMU's, three class 117's, with two of them reduced to two car units and all now withdrawn. Leonard Rogers.

At about this time the rundown of North London Railway dmus was in full swing and we started to couple anything that would move in random sets. Class 117 51400 was at this time withdrawn and is seen in the sidings at Bletchley depot. Ian Buck.
Out of service at Bletchley Depot 51356 on 3rd October 2000. Ian Buck.
117306 (51411 closest with 51369) stands on the buffer stops of 'E' road at Aylesbury Depot, being for spares for the Sandite units based there at the time. As can be seen the unit has had it's destination blind box removed and the '6' on the unit number has been patchwork painted. The unit was transferred from Shoeburyness to Aylesbury in one trip, sandwiched between Class 121 units, although 117306 was running too. Taken on 27/09/00, this is reasonably soon after it had moved to Aylesbury. Greg Scott.
117 306 (51369 + 51411) at Aylesbury, date unknown. It arrived there in August 2000 from Shoeburyness and would be a source of spares before being cut up there in May 2002. Graham Baker.
Class 117 51369 was cut up at Aylesbury depot by Sims Metals, seen here on 29 May 2002. Roger Marks.
