A DMU railtour at Tufts Junction on 23 September 1973. Organised by the Dean Forest Railway Preservation Society, it ran from Bristol to Parkend for their Steam Day. It's unclear whether this is a Class 117 or a 118. Stuart Mackay Collection.
summer 1974
Selly Oak Station, Birmingham, Summer 1974. Built by the Midland Railway in 1876 Selly Oak station in the southern surburbs was unmanned & uncared for in 1974. Still served by these dmus from New Street to Redditch the NE-SW expresses hauled by Peaks swept through the station at speed. I had just arrived from King's Norton but not many others alighted. Not long afterwards in 1978 the whole historic lot was swept away & a modern brick & plastic replacement built. No doubt an improvement on the dereliction but not on the original which if renovated instead of demolished would have been very much better. Selly Oak station became part of the Cross City Line from Lichfield to Redditch & was electrified in 1993. The structure in the centre is the roof over the staircase which lead to the subway over to the Down platform. This has been replaced by a footbridge. Pete LG99.
19th October 1974
19th October 1974 - I braved the torrential rain to take this shot of the Midland Railway's Gloucester Eastgate station looking south with a dmu in the platform. The other end of the covered footbridge joining the two Gloucester stations is in the right background. The goods lines to left have already been lifted. I was waiting for a Southwest to Northeast Class 47-hauled train to take me back to Birmingham. The whole site today is a supermarket. What a surprise! Pete LG99.

A refurbished Class 117 DMU with a Class 121 DMBS and DTS on the rear (one each of all the five different DMU vehicle types that were built by Pressed Steel!) at Moreton, Didcot, in January 1979. Doug Nicholls.
