Two-car BRCW Class 118 DMU with Driving Motor Second (DMS) W51327 leading (and presumably 51312), was in the bay platform at the West end of Plymouth station with a service to Gunnislake on July 26th 1980. Martyn Hilbert.
A Class 118 3-Car DMU with Motor Brake Second W51320 leading (and presumably 59472 + 51305 behind) stands at the single active platform at Falmouth ready to depart on another 11.75 mile journey to the bay platform on the Cornish Main Line at Truro on July 29th 1980. Although much rationalisation has taken place, at least passengers have been spared the bus shelter treatment, and the original platform canopy was still in use. Martyn Hilbert.
Leaning into the curve alongside the Hayle Estuary, Class 118 Driving Motor Second W51328 (and presumably 59509 + 51313) had arrived at Lelant Saltings with the branch service from St Ives on July 30th 1980. The single platform station at Lelant Saltings, on the St Erth to St Ives line was opened in 1978 as a 'Park & Ride' facility for the town of St Ives. Martyn Hilbert.
With a threatening sky, Class 118 three-car set P470 (51328 and presumably 59509 + 51313) has arrived at the picturesque Cornish resort of St Ives with the branch service from St Erth on July 30th 1980. The original station site is in the background, now a large car park and a far cry from the days when St Ives had a small loco depot for the branch engine, and the line had through trains to and from London Paddington on Summer Saturdays. A Class 118 DMU (presumably 51319 59477 51304) on a Swindon to Cheltenham Spa service departs Stroud on a misty Winter's day in 1981. Stroud station, a typical GWR affair, has barely changed in the last 29 years. The railways have changed beyond imagination and mostly not for the better. fgrsimon.
