120 DMU

circa 1966

The driver of the Swindon unit (the far car is 50686) opens up having negotiated the junction at Smethwick West. The train is bound for Hereford and will continue though Stourbridge and Worcester, these comfortable units has curtains and little Formica topped tables just big enough to put two cups of tea on. Smethwick West would soon have a rebuild, the engineering blue brick platforms were too low, as can be seen on the far platform a set of steps was provided for the less sprightly. Peter Shoesmith took this from under the footbridge circa 1966, the smoke deflector is seen at the top, the pre-rebuild station was a fine building with a good size awning to protect the passengers although of course the would be a disinfectant smelling waiting room to retreat into. The platforms are still there today with their tiny bus shelters and platform lights but everything is slowly disappearing into a verdant wilderness. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.
