A Swindon Works image (negative 5C 256) showing the bodyshell of a Cross Country DMSL. The doors stand out as being different colours as these were aluminium, the body of course was steel. This was taken on the 10 December 1958, and is one of the first batch of these vehicles. British Railways.

120 DMU

circa late 1950s

DMUs in Bristol Marsh Junction Depot circa late 1950s. A Derby suburban set is on the left formed as a two-car, centre is a Swindon Cross-Country, also formed as a two-car. W50741 is probably the DMBC as image 27151 was likely taken on the same visit from the opposite side. The whiskers on the set on the right identify it as a GRC&W vehicle, the angled fittings where the vacuum pipes come through the buffer beam seem to have been used on some of the Cross-Country sets. Swindon built diesels on display. A Cross-Country DMU, behind it another DMU car then a GWR railcar, and a Warship diesel hydraulic locomotive are seen at their birthplace. This negative had a date of 18 March 1960 on the sleeve but the condition of the three-car suggests earlier, possibly 1958. Stuart Mackay Collection.

These are of my 120 trip to St Combs. A contact in the GNSR group does not know of another 120 visit, so it is likely to be rare, if not unique. Eric Stuart.
