A view of a busy Southall shed taken from W55034 operating a Brentford Branch Special. Back in the 1980s, the Great Western Railway Preservation Group (GWRPG), which was based in the old Otto Monsted margarine factory next to Southall station, would run shuttles on the freight-only Brentford branch on Bank Holidays. On one such day, Easter Sunday in 1984, I took the opportunity to ride down this rare freight branch in one of the classic and versatile Class 121 'Bubble Cars' W55034. The scene here was taken just after leaving the station, and shows a clear view of the old eight-road Southall shed (81C) which was hosting a number of units (including one of the unique Class 210s) and a couple of shunters. A rare branch line was about to be traversed! Chris McKee.

Class 121 set C133 (W55033) is seen stood off the north end of Bargoed station in the headshunt siding. When this shot was taken the upside platform for northbound train at Bargoed had been abandoned and all trains used the down line platform only. North of Bargoed had been singled through to Rhymney as an economy measure leaving just a short stub of the down line as a headshunt where the DMU is stood. The off peak service on the Rhymney Valley line saw trains run hourly from Barry Island to Bargoed only. The final leg of the journey from Bargoed to Rhymney was thus covered by a single car DMU on alternate hours which was deemed adequate for the daytime demand. As both trains couldn't share the same short platform the Rhymney service would have to stand off until the platform was vacated by the train back down the valley. My photo depicts set C133 waiting to drop into the platform to form 2C65 the 14.20 all stations Bargoed to Rhymney as soon as the 14.15 to Cardiff has departe Adrian Nicholls.

The Greenford branch shuttle 'Bubble car' is seen in platform 3 at Ealing Broadway station waiting to work the 15.25 to Greenford. The branch proper leaves the West of England mainline at West Ealing Junction but West Ealing station was never a suitable location to reverse the train at. Instead it ran through to the busier Ealing Broadway station where London Underground connections were also available and there was a turn back siding at the east end of the station between the relief and fast lines.
