The Way it Was. Inter-City Class 126 DMU flying through Hillington East on the 16:35 Glasgow Central to Girvan working. Unless checked by signals, DMUs by this point would be flat out. Only Inverclyde EMU services stopped here and on late afternoons at that time, guards would deposit bundles of evening newspapers from their EMU brake vans for waiting delivery boys. The Way it Was. Swindon Inter-City 126 420 and classmate racing towards Hillington East station on the 15:15 Ayr to Glasgow Central service. The quadruple tracks were reduced to two tracks with electrification to Gourock and Wemyss Bay in 1967. Much of the electrification steelwork was founded in the formation vacated by the fast lines. At least there were still two through routes to the Ayrshire coast at that time, one via Paisley Canal and this via Paisley Gilmour Street. However, this scene has much changed and a third track (electrified) has been installed as part of capacity improvements between Shields Junction and Paisley. Alas, the Paisley Canal line is no longer a through route. Saturday 30 May 1981. alicia hartman.

The Class 126 diesel units built for the Ayrshire Coast and introduced in 1959 were designed so that they could be formed as 6-car trains with through gangways. The gangway connections were removed and panelled over from the 1970s to prevent draughts in the driving cab. One such carriage is seen here at Ayr on August 30, 1981. Jeremy Chapter.
