British Railways (Derby Lightweight) single unit (DMBS) railcar M79900 at Banbury Merton Street station with a service for Buckingham - c.1958. Remarkably this railcar survives to this day, having been rebuilt as test coach "Iris", based at Bletchley and numbered 975010 in the departmental series. Its last years of service were with the Research Centre at Derby where it was again repainted into lined green livery. It is now preserved at the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. 53A Models of Hull Collection.
Derby Lightweight two-car DMU set M79173 + M79674 at Manchester London Road. Date unknown, the vehicles arrived in the Manchester area in September 1957 and would spent time at Gorton, Reddish and Longsight before withdrawal in July 1967. Note the cab roof dome colours. On the power car they are the same colour as the roof, indicating they are formed from alloy. On the trailer they are white, indicating fibreglass. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Derby Lightweight DMBS M79129 stabled on its own at Monument Lane, seen from the station platform. E79040 at Mundesley, date unknown, the DMUs were inroduced to the Mundesely branch in April 1956. A more unusual viewpoint, showing end details not normally seen in images - the lettering, distinct exhaust design, waist level jumpers and a water filler pipe for the coolant header tanks mounted in the vestibule ceilings.
