A long line of Derby Lightweight vehicles in platform 4 of Birmingham New Street on the 7th May 1957. They will work the 5.15pm to Lichfield (6-cars), 5.20pm to Lichfield (6-cars) and 5.42pm to Four Oaks (4-cars, will have additional vehicles added from an incoming service). Michael Mensing.

British Railways (Derby Lightweight) single unit (DMBS) railcar M79900 at Banbury Merton Street station with a service for Buckingham - c.1958. Remarkably this railcar survives to this day, having been rebuilt as test coach "Iris", based at Bletchley and numbered 975010 in the departmental series. Its last years of service were with the Research Centre at Derby where it was again repainted into lined green livery. It is now preserved at the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. 53A Models of Hull Collection.

Derby Lightweight two-car DMU set M79173 + M79674 at Manchester London Road. Date unknown, the vehicles arrived in the Manchester area in September 1957 and would spent time at Gorton, Reddish and Longsight before withdrawal in July 1967. Note the cab roof dome colours. On the power car they are the same colour as the roof, indicating they are formed from alloy. On the trailer they are white, indicating fibreglass. Stuart Mackay Collection.

Derby Lightweight DMBS M79129 stabled on its own at Monument Lane, seen from the station platform. Date unknown, it was allocated to the depot from new in February 1956 until May 1958 when it moved to Llandudno Junction. Note the jumper cables still in the sockets on the left side of the cab. On a rainy day at Wickford a Derby Lightweight waits to depart with a train for Southminster. Date unknown, these DMUs began to be used on these services in September 1956 and Stratford lost its allocation in June 1959. Stuart Mackay Collection.

E79040 at Mundesley, date unknown, the DMUs were inroduced to the Mundesely branch in April 1956. A more unusual viewpoint, showing end details not normally seen in images - the lettering, distinct exhaust design, waist level jumpers and a water filler pipe for the coolant header tanks mounted in the vestibule ceilings.
