I visited Barrow on a Northern Railfans minibus trip to sheds in the northwest that left from Manchester Victoria - still pretty steamy then - on the Friday evening. This was my one and only real trainspotting foray. Disappointingly there were no steam engines remaining at Barrow in 1968 & I only took a couple of shots - this negative lay unprinted for years. I wish now that I had taken more photos around the shed but at least I did record the depot’s intermediate period when it mainly handled dmus. This Derby Lightweight unit M79134 has obviously been involved in a nasty knock with front buffer gone and cab windows smashed. New to Monument Lane in March 1956 & transferred to Carlisle Upperby in January 1968, the damage was considered too serious for repair and it was withdrawn in early June 1968. Pete LG99.
Two two-car Derby Lightweight DMUs head for Leamington Spa Avenue at Milverton (north of Warwick). Leading seems to be M79136, its partner - presumably M79657 - is also carrying the BR emblem. Michael Mensing.

Derby Lightweight vehicles M79143 + M79656 are shown in this Derby Works image (negative 56/931) circa September 1956 presumably on the Wirksworth Branch as these often were. Neither vehicle is new, and it's a non-original pairing. M79143 is believed to have been new to Monument Lane with M79663 where they spent a few weeks before moving to Llandudno Junction. M79656 is thought to have been new to Llandudno Junction with M79135, and the new date on the end of the vehicle can be read as 14-5-56. British Railways.

Derby Lightweight vehicles E79150 and E79402 at South Gosforth on 15 August 1970. Both vehicles were from the four-car NER sets and would be cut up at the depot in July 1971. At the rear of the siding is a blue Cravens vehicle. David Mant.
E79152 at the front of the 11.35am Newcastle - Leeds City about to depart from York on May 19, 1962. This was one of the four-car sets, un-repainted since new as all vehicles still have the original lion over wheel crests. The cab front has had whiskers applied, and a dummy socket added for the jumper cables. There could be draft problems in the cab judging by the amount of papers shoved down the front of the drivers desk. Michael Mensing.
The 'The Little North Western' - a joint RCTS / BR tour from Leeds - seen at Arnside on 15 September 1956. It was formed of E79153 + E79400 + E79326 + E79510. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Derby Lightweight two-car DMU set M79173 + M79674 at Manchester London Road. Date unknown, the vehicles arrived in the Manchester area in September 1957 and would spent time at Gorton, Reddish and Longsight before withdrawal in July 1967. Note the cab roof dome colours. On the power car they are the same colour as the roof, indicating they are formed from alloy. On the trailer they are white, indicating fibreglass. Stuart Mackay Collection.

BR blue 'Derby Lightweight' driving trailer M79184 awaiting the torch at George Cohen's scrapyard at Cransley near Kettering on 21st June 1970. A victim of the many branch lines axed in the 1960's and being non-standard 'Yellow Diamond' coupling code. Gordon Edgar.
A London Midland Region publicity image (negative DM449) showing "Conway Valley - diesel railcar on Llandudno Junction - Blaenau Ffestiniog service". No date, probably around spring/summer 1956, and seen between Glan Conwy and Llandudno Junction where it runs along the east bank of the River Conwy. The leading (but not the rear) set is a power twin and the closest vehicle appears to be M79185 - a vehicle that would be allocated to Llandudno Junction several times in its short 11 1/2 year career. British Railways.
Oops! A Derby Lightweight vehicle has suffered a broken axle on the cab end bogie and the passengers have been detrained. There were no details with the negative but it seems to be the same incident as captioned Colour Rail image reference 30136 making it M79185, circa early 1960s. Stuart Mackay Collection.
