All of the original West Cumberland trailer cars (M79600-12) were scrapped by Arnott Young at various locations other than two which moved to Derby. There one became part of the Ultrasonic test train, the other, M79610 (which was the original partner of the ultrasonic test train power car M79018) was scrapped at Cohens in Kettering in early 1971, where it is pictured. Tony Wilkins.
M79610 at Cohens in Kettering in early 1971. During it's time at Derby it's had a hole cut in the side (why?) and glass removed, but otherwise looks complete. Grey paint has been applied (covering graffiti or an experiment?) but it's clear its last livery in traffic was plain blue with yellow cab doors and 3" numbers. Tony Wilkins.
No details came with this image, but it's three West Cumberland sets, and appears to be M79612 leading (now preserved). Being a six-car formation and carrying sideboards it's probably one of the regular 'John Peel Land Cruise' trains. It is seen on the West Coast Main Line, passing over the Dillicar water troughs in the Lune Gorge just south of Tebay. Stuart Mackay Collection.

Accident damaged E79614 at Cambridge diesel depot. It had struck a lorry on an occupation crossing between Worlington and Isleham on the Mildenhall branch while working the 7.34am ex Mildenhall on 15 January 1960. The photo is undated but will have been taken soon afterwards. The location of the accident is sometimes given as "Freckenham crossing" which I translate as being Smith's occupation crossing No. 61 just west of Worlington Golf Links Halt. The lorry, which was destroyed, had three occupants of which two died at the scene and the third subsequently. This may suggest the DMU struck the front, i.e. cab, end of the lorry. The Mildenhall branch had a blanket speed limit of 30mph so the DMU would not have been travelling any faster. Darren Kitson Collection.
