117 DMU

Class 117 DMU sets L722+L703 at Braunstone Gate Sidings, Leicester on February 19, 1994. Doing what the BLS (Branch Line Society) did best crunching the rust on sections of the network rarely reached by other railtour operators. Here class 117 DMU sets L722 (51345+51387) & L703 (51359+51401) coupled behind disgorge their passengers into the remnants of Leicester Braunstone Gate Sidings for a photo stop on the "Radlett Rambler" railtour. This line being the former Great Central Railway route into the city from the south but truncated as a branch after the Beeching closures, its final days being to serve Vic Berry's scrapyard using a curve added by BR in 1965 off the Coalville freight line linking the former Midland and GC lines together. The whole area has since been redeveloped with no trace of the railway remaining. Adrian Nicholls.

Western Region DMU set L707 (51342+51384) makes for an unusual sight departing London Waterloo being used for driver route learning trips on May 29, 1993. Waterloo International station visible behind had been formerly opened 3 weeks earlier on 6th May 1993 the day services should have started through the Channel Tunnel. Sadly with tunnel construction delays there was to be a another 17 month wait for service to start and in the meantime Waterloo International was simply hired out for corporate events. BR EPS carried on training crews in the meantime with frequent trips from London to Folkestone using a modified EMU with cinema style seats while a hired 2-car DMU from Network SouthEast was used for drivers to learn the West London line from North Pole Depot and the mainline into London Waterloo in readiness for the launch of Eurostar in 1994. Adrian Nicholls.

116 DMU

The Monmouthshire Railway Society "DMU Demise" railtour is seen in the abandoned Swansea Docks High Level Reception Yard part of the once extensive King's Dock Yards complex on September 26, 1992. This was the last MRS railtour to deploy a DMU and seating was limited for the fact the remaining 3-car class 116 DMU sets based at Cardiff Canton had been reduced to power twins mostly for use on the Cardiff to Aberdare line and only five set survived by this date. Sets C392 (51134+51147) and C395 (51140+51153) were used on the tour and they only remained in traffic a few more months before all the Cardiff based 116 DMUs were withdrawn. The railtour was advertised to proceed onto ABP (Associated Britsh Ports) tracks from Burrows Junction as far as King's Dock Communication Bridge East Ground Frame in Swansea Docks but this was as far as the BR inspector deemed safe to take the train on what were disused tracks. Adrian Nicholls.

On a cold grey afternoon one of the Hull Botanic Gardens based Trans Pennine "hybrid" DMU sets formed of class 123 and 124 vehicles calls at Doncaster with the 12.45 Manchester Piccadilly to Cleethorpes on January 28, 1984. The rear vehicle (nearest) is a class 124 'Trans Pennine' and originally part of the order delivered in 1960 when the class ran as 6-car sets with four powered vehicles giving a formidable power to weight ratio for the hilly Trans Pennine routes. Their Leyland Albion engines developing 1840hp for a full 6-car train set. Not being considered for the early 1980's DMU life extension overhauls condemned both classes to early withdrawal as they were insulated with blue asbestos. 1984 being their final year in service with most withdrawn by the spring timetable change when their diagrams went over to class 31/4's on loco hauled stock. Adrian Nicholls.

Following departmental use, the unit was withdrawn in 1993, but M51937 has survived into preservation and is now part of the two-car Class 108 DMU owned by the Poulton & Wyre Railway based on part of the former Fleetwood line.
