With electrification work in progress, two two-car Derby Lightweight DMUs arrive at Manchester London Road with the 3.0pm ex-Marple on 9th April 1960. On the left is English Electric Type 4 D236, between it an the church is a steam loco, the electrification train behind the DMU has a 350hp diesel shunter at the far end. Motor second W50131 is closest, displaying "Newport" on the destination blind - this is likely a Blaenavon to Newport service. The Blaenavon line would close to passengers that year and the set would be transferred to Laira by June. Michael Mensing.
