At Fairlie (High) station on 27 August 1977 Class 107 DMU sets 131 and 138 are working the 17.55 Largs to Glasgow train. On the left is a crane used for transferring nuclear fuel flasks from road to rail (it was labelled safe working load 53t 6cwt). Class 116 DMU set C305 (presumably 53131 + 59039 + 53089) at Cardiff Bute Road station in 1986, before much of the development which has transformed the Cardiff Bay area over the last 20 years. On the left can be seen the former station building, which also served as the headquarters of the Taff Vale Railway before 1923. In 1986 it had recently been renovated and was in use as a museum (including an excellent model of the station in the late 19th century). Tom Burnham.
In pre-electrification days, passengers alight from the 16.15 from Bedford to St Pancras at Harpenden Central on 9 June 1971, which is formed of two of the 4-car Derby/Rolls-Royce suburban diesel units characteristic of this line (CD611 of Cricklewood depot leading). Note the "red triangle" coupling code symbols on the front Tom Burnham.
The 18.50 from Matlock to Crewe on 23 June 1972 - comprising a 3-car Swindon Cross-Country dmu with the centre car in plain blue hauling a CCT van - pauses at Matlock Bath. Adrian Nicholls notes that in the 1972 section L WTT the CCT van spent all day at Matlock and only two trains on the branch were authorised to convey a trailing load. Outbound from Derby it was conveyed behind the DMU on 6P59 05.40 Derby to Matlock with one intermediate call at Ambergate for the single line token at 05.56 and arrival into Matlock at 06.08. A footnote says parcel traffic but probably newspapers as well. The DMU must have run beyond the station into the old goods yard to drop the van before returning back to the platform to form 2P59 06.37 to Derby calling all stations. The return working (photographed) was also 2P59, the 18.52 ex Matlock, terminating at Derby. Tom Burnham.

With a backdrop of a cloud-wreathed Cader Idris range, the 12.35 from Machynlleth to Pwllheli (formed of a total of 7 dmu cars) crosses Barmouth bridge on the Cambrian coast line on September 22, 1983. There is a two-car Class 101 on each end, the centre set is a Class 120 with 101 centre car. Tom Burnham.
