120 DMU

On the way to March Yard on 19 October 1985 where my friend scored his "cop" we called at Ely station where this class 120 unit, EP514 with vehicles 53687 + 59264 + 53785, was on its way to Birmingham New Street while passing Ely South signalbox with the diminishing range of semaphore signals showing how much track rationalisation had been carried out in the recent past. Peter Tandy.

On a journey from Leamington Spa to Ely on 19 October 1985 we stopped at Cambridge where I photographed all-blue class 105 DMU, 51268 + 54422, receding from the camera probably making a shunt move between platforms at the station. Peter Tandy.

104 DMU

On 19 October 1985 I was chatting to a friend at Leamington Spa who said that one of the last locomotives he was yet to see was stabled at March Yard and would I like a trip over there? On the way we called at Bedford where this class 104 comprising vehicles 53444 + 59206 + 53500 was stabled in the electrified siding alongside the virtually empty car park. Peter Tandy.

114 DMU

Class 114 set T027 (presumably 53019 + 54027) after shunting into platform 2 at Stratford-upon-Avon on 28 March 1990 and prior to departure for Leamington Spa. The upper quadrant starter is in the off position but the guard hasn't changed the destination blind, probably realising that it wasn't worth the effort as the few passsengers using the train in the mid-afternoon would have had as good a knowledge as him where the train was going. The signal to the left of the starter controlled the exit from the down goods loop which ran behind the signalbox; this was still occasionally used at the time for stabling the stock of excursion trains. It wasn't long for this world though, being severed the following year and removed altogether within a few months. Peter Tandy.

114 DMU

One of my favourite classes of DMMU was the Derby Heavyweights, class 114. Several sets ended their days at Tyseley Depot and spent a lot of time shuttling between Stratford-upon-Avon and Leamington Spa. With only 1 car powered, their performance could best be described as ponderous, but the seats were comfortable and the ambience, in my opinion at least, much better than the class 150s currently used in the area. This picture was taken during the afternoon of 28 March 1990 and shows T027 (presumably 53019 + 54027) arriving at Stratford from Leamington. Note that the signalman has already set the ground signals and the points for the train to reverse out and run back into platform 2 for the return to Leamington; this was before the track and signalling was altered to allow departures from platform 1. Peter Tandy.

Set BX371 stands at Buxton Station on 30/12/1988. Individual vehicle numbers were not noted at the time, but the leading car of this 3-car set is believed to be 53925 from the damage above the roller blind. The other cars are believed to be 59155 (centre) and 52039 (driving) Robert Hope.
