Some enthusiasts, but mainly curious locals at Ramsbottom, had come out to witness what was billed as the last BR train, 'The Rossendale Farewell', to run from Bury to Rawtenstall on February 14th 1981. Cravens Class 105 Driving Motor Second Lavatory (DMSL) M50794 was bringing up the rear of the six-car formation across Bridge Street. Martyn Hilbert.

Morning sunlight was reflecting on the windscreen of Longsight allocated set LO275, as it departed from Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on June 29th 1991. The Class 108 was formed of cars M53980 & M54256 and was passing signal PN486 which was then mounted on the platform. At the time, the station had small stone built shelters on each platform. The one on the eastbound platform was constructed from the stone blocks of the old Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway building that once graced the platform here. The opposite (westbound) platform had a shelter built from imitation stone (concrete) blocks. Both these structures were short-lived, they were replaced by anodised aluminium shelters with small glass panels. Martyn Hilbert.

A four-car Class 127 (Red Triangle) DMU, with Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M51623 leading, was departing from Elstree on the Up Slow line with a Bedford to London St Pancras all-stations working on April 12th 1980. Martyn Hilbert.

Despite the display on the destination blind, Class 108 Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M53926 was leading a four-car Preston to Ormskirk service, departing from Croston on January 25th 1986. The rear set was a BRCW Class 104. Martyn Hilbert.

The Fisons weed control train was stabled between duties at the former Lostock Hall MPD on July 15th 1982. The nearest vehicle was FA99900 in use as a spray control coach, and was originally a Gloucester Railway Carriage & Wagon Company DMU car E56315 dating from 1958. Lostock Hall MPD was the last operational steam shed on the British Railways standard gauge network, and after steam finished in August 1968, it became a diesel depot until 1973. It then was used for repairing wagons & coaches, until closed completely in 1986, when the site remained derelict until demolition in 1990. The area remains undeveloped and the shed area with the footprint of the buildings and filled-in inspection pits, is still clearly defined. Martyn Hilbert.

104 DMU

A two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53494 & M53468 was passing the orchard trees, as it approached Narrow Lane farm crossing with a Preston to Ormskirk service on September 17th 1985. Martyn Hilbert.

120 DMU

Complete with its first class saloon, Swindon Class 120 Driving Motor Brake Composite (DMBC) W51578 was leading a Worcester to Birmingham New Street service at Blackwell, grinding its way up the last few yards of the Lickey Incline at almost walking pace on September 5th 1981. Martyn Hilbert.

120 DMU

A Swindon Class 120 three-car 'Cross-Country' DMU with Driving Motor Second Lavatory (DMSL) M53655 leading, was passing through Leyland station on the Up Slow with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on December 28th 1985. Martyn Hilbert.

117 DMU

On a hot and hazy late Summer afternoon, a three-car Pressed Steel Class 117 Suburban DMU, with Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) W51332 leading, was toiling up the 1 in 37 gradient of the Lickey Incline at Vigo, with a Birmingham bound service on September 5th 1981. The set was finished in the 'refurbished' white with blue stripe livery, and the other two vehicles are presumably 59484 + 51374. Martyn Hilbert.

120 DMU

A Class 120/108 four-car DMU working a Preston to Colne service, was climbing Farington Curve on October 12th 1985. The train was formed of a two-car Swindon Cross-Country Class 120, with Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M51577 leading, coupled to M51586, with a two-car Class 108 bringing up the rear. Buildings in Preston town centre are visible on the skyline, including the 309ft spire of St Walburges Church, visible above the rear car of the train. The wooden post and rail fence visible on the left centre of this scene, marks the course of the Preston - Ormskirk route running in a cutting. Martyn Hilbert.

101 DMU

A two-car Class 101/108 DMU with Driving Trailer Second Lavatory (DTSL) M54052 leading, presumably with 51910, was accelerating away from the single line token exchange at Midge Hall, whilst working a Preston to Ormskirk service on September 29th 1985. The home signal on the Down Line, controlled from the 'box at Midge Hall, is the only semaphore still extant in the Preston area. Martyn Hilbert.

105 DMU

In blue/grey livery, Cravens Class 105 Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) SC51481, was passing through North Queensferry with a six-car mixed rake of DMU cars, bound for Edinburgh on July 23rd 1981. The Cravens is formed into Haymarket set 105376, the other vehicles being Metro-Cammell Class 101 cars. Presumably, the Cravens had been finished in blue/grey to match the rest of the three-car set. SC51481 spent its entire working life in Scotland, it was one of a batch of twenty-two x 2 car Power/Trailer sets supplied new in 1959. It would eventually be withdrawn from service in November 1981 and was scrapped by Mayer Newman at Snailwell, Cambridgeshire in 1982. Martyn Hilbert.

126 DMU

On Tuesday 28th June 1960 the six-car Swindon Inter-City set working the 7.52pm Girvan to Glasgow service failed after departing Girvan. It would be propelled, at some points reaching 40mph, by steam loco 45086 (behind the tree) working the "Lothian Piper" fitted freight (just two vans and a brake). It is seen on the approach to Ayr where it arrived one hour late. At Ayr the fault seems to have righted itself and the DMU would run under its own power as the 9.30pm Ayr to Glasgow. Bill Hamilton.

126 DMU

The 11.0pm Glasgow - Ayr service (formed 51022 + 59392 + 51032) was involved in a sidelong collision with Clan 72001 'Clan Cameron' when departing from St Enoch. DMS 51022 is seen after the incident, it would be returned to traffic after repair. Unknown Newspaper.
