116 DMU

First generation DMUs were not common on the line between Coventry and Birmingham New Street and this is possibly my only such shot. The train is showing "Special" on its cab panel and that it the only information I have about it. The unit is TS505 (presumably 53094 + 59638 + 53066), a class 116 set with a class 127 centre car, passing the car park at Berkswell station on 26 November 1986. The picture was taken using a Ricoh compact camera with automatic exposure on Ilford FP4 film and it appears that the poor light was almost a bit too much for the asa 125 rating. The front of the cab seems to have gained a dent at some point Peter Tandy.

116 DMU

TS614 had just left Birmingham Moor Street on 3 May 1985 when another class 116, T613 (presumably 53863 + 59594 + 53916) arrived on one of the regular services from Shirley on the North Warwickshire Line. Shirley station was the busiest on the NWL between Tyseley and Stratford-upon-Avon and had a 20 minute train frequency throughour much of the day. Peter Tandy.

116 DMU

An early morning image from Birmingham Moor Street taken on 3 May 1985 with class 116 TS614 (presumably 53842 + 59609 + 53895) having just arrived and being prepared to go out again. The next working was to Stratford-upon-Avon but instead of the then usual route via Henley-in-Arden it was routed via Dorridge and Hatton North and West Junctions. The destination panel was slightly misleading because the train didn't call at Hatton station but had to be used to differentiate it from those running along the North Warwickshire Line. This was the only passenger train to use this route at the time with only the very occasional charter and engineering working also covering the route. Peter Tandy.

119 DMU

An unusual set at Birmingham Moor Street on 3 May 1985 in the form of Bristol's class 119 set B590 (51087 + 59418 + 51058). I don't know what the next working might have been and wonder if there were no names for stations in the West Midlands on its destination roller blind. This was a time when this part of Birmingham was pretty run down and the backdrop here reflects that nicely. The buildings have all gone in 2025 but the new developments are to my eyes much less interesting and nothing like as photogenic and the DMUs using the station today don't have anything like the character of the first-generation units. At the date of this picture Moor Street was terminus of the lines from Stratford-upon-Avon and Leamington Spa but clearance work on the trackbed to Snow Hill had just commenced prior to its later reopening. Peter Tandy.

104 DMU

This image was likely taken for the Brush Type 4, at Cannock Road Junction, Wolverhampton, circa mid-1960s. It also features a mixed-livery BRC&W triple set, the far car with the BR logo on the cab door will has a yellow panel not a yellow end, and another couple of DMU sets in the siding - what seems to be a suburban set but with a headcode so not a 116, and what seems to be a Met-Camm further back. The image was taken by Harry Hodgkinson. Stuart Mackay Collection.
