There is no disguising the location for this picture of Tyseley class 116 set TS615 (presumably 53850 + 59591 + 53102) as it arrived at Stratford-upon-Avon on a dull 27 March 1985 with the 12.20 from Birmingham Moor Street. This pair of gasholders was a long-standing feature just outside the station and were obviously part of the town gasworks. Peter Tandy.
I didn't make a very good job of composing this picture of class 101 TS417 formed of 53323, 59129 and 53307. It was standing at Leamington Spa after arriving from Birmingham Moor Street and about to run out of the station on the up line before reversing and coming back into the station for its next trip back to the city. The attraction was obviously the different paint job on the can end which it had carried for a couple of years at this point but had evaded my camera until 16 March 1985. Peter Tandy.
Single unit W55030 (L130) had just passed through Reading on 18 April 1985 when I photographed it running as empty stock in the Didcot direction. The weather was very dull and misty with a light drizzle falling but the lack of sun on the nose (or tail) doesn't matter in 2025 when scenes like this can never be repeated. Peter Tandy.
As was often the case in 1985 I had no idea that this DMU special was running until the signal for the up main line at Leamington Spa on 1 June 1985 flicked to green. It wasn't hard to work out that it was a private charter for the Ffestiniog Railway Society and the station supervisor told the small group of spotters and photographers that it was its way to an event at Didcot Railway Centre. Tyseley class 116 set TS626 (53093 and presumably 59115 + 53818) wasn't in the best position for a shot at Stratford-upon-Avon with the shadow of the station footbridge falling over the cab end. The unit was standing alongside 55003 stabled in the long-gone Cold Store siding while the 3 car unit was waiting to form the 08.12 to Leamington Spa on 1 June 1985. Peter Tandy.
Class 121 55032 has left the turnback siding at Barnt Green spot on time on 26 September 1991 and is running into the platform to pick 2 or 3 passengers going to Bromsgrove, Droitwich Spa or Worcester Shrub Hill. Peter Tandy.
On 26 September 1991 a 4 car Tyseley with an unclear set number, possibly T407, a hybrid formed of classes 116, 116 and 127, was turning off the Birmingham to Gloucester line at on its way to Redditch. Behind it on the main line is another hybrid set going towards Birmingham along with 55032 in the turnback siding waiting for a path to cross over and form the next service from Barnt Green back to Worcester Shrub Hill. The Paddington to Greenford shuttles were a safe bet for fans of single unit DMUs in 1989. This picture is dated 30 November 1989 with class 121 car 129 (55029) passing the Plasser & Theurer staff car car park just before the call at West Ealing station. I wouldn't betting that none of the road vehicles have survived into 2025, whereas 55029 is still around. Peter Tandy.
The line between Longbridge and Birmingham New Street saw a 15 minute frequency of DMUs throughout most of the day and threw up quite a variety of classes and combinations of classes within the same set. This is Class 117 set T304 (51407 + 59517 + 51365) at Kings Norton in 1988, which ended up in the south-west as a 2 car set until withdrawal from Laira in 1993. Peter Tandy.
