BR green liveried Swindon (introduced 1957) "Intercity" DMBS (Intermediate) SC79088 leading what is probably a Waverley to Glasgow Queen Street service pictured at Edinburgh - c.1970. Later versions of these units constructed to work services from Glasgow to Ayrshire were to be designated TOPS Class 126, but the earlier 79xxx units were never so classified as they were scheduled for early withdrawal. 53A Models of Hull Collection.

From a negative that has deteriorated, but still of interest. It shows a Swindon Inter-City DMU at Turnhouse on 11 April 1971, which was Easter Sunday. This was recorded as a diversion, presumably a Glasgow - Edinburgh service that used the Winchburgh Junction to Dalmeny line then reversed. Stuart Mackay Collection.

A small part of an official image (ScR Negative 1972/2814) which showed trackwork in progress at Millerhill on 19/10/72. In this small part of the image, behind the stack of track panels, are rows of stored Swindon 79xxx series Inter-City vehicles. There is also a row of Clayton locos on the left. The brake vans suggests the DMU vehicle were loco hauled to the yard. In the second row from the Claytons there are at least eight buffet cars together at this end (identifiable by the large covers over the kitchen ventilator fans). The third row contains just two Swindon vehicles but there is also a Gloucester unit behind. British Rail.

In comparison with the image taken almost a month earlier (https://railcar.co.uk/images/17256) the Claytons have gone but there seems to be no change in the rows of Swindon Inter-City vehicles, and the Gloucester set is still there in the third row. Withdrawn Class 126 units at Millerhill in April 1973 (SC79109 closest). Most of the withdrawn E&G Swindons, which is what we knew them as, ended up stored at Millerhill Yard before being taken south for Scrap. They then hung around in East Anglia for a quite a while as we kept stumbling across them when we were on trips at such unlikely places as Ely and Mistley awaiting devouring by Kings scrapyards in Norwich and Snailwell. Some also went to Swindon for cutting up and sat alongside the Westerns waiting their turn to go. Alistair Ness.

Several rows of Swindon SC79xxx vehicles are seen stored at Millerhill in early 1974 when displaced from E&G duties by push-pull class 27s, and from their home at Leith Central when it closed in 1972. They would eventually make their way to Snailwell for scrapping. Murray Liston.

Mess vehicle ADB975426 formed in the Bletchley TMD breakdown train. The fresh paint suggests this was soon after conversion circa 1975. Ian McDonald.
