448  MAINTENANCE AND SERVICING ARRANGEMENTS.  (Cont'd).

Reddish.   Mr.Adkinson said it was considered preferable for the heavy maintenance to be carried out at Newton Heath instead of Reddish and for Longsight to be utilised until Newton Heath is ready.

Mr. Varley will ascertain the position so far as the Eastern Region is concerned.

Derby.   Mr. Harrison's letter of the 6th April proposing that the new diesel rail car shed be erected at the N.E. end of the locomotive works was considered. It was noted that the length of this shed would be restricted to 350 ft. and Messrs. Gould and Adkinson stated that a length of 450 ft. would be required on a site near Etches Park.

Agreed that Messrs. Gould, Adkinson, Butland, Stanley, Longridge and Varley should meet on the proposed sites and afterwards give a firm recommendation on the two proposals.  Mr. Varley to take the initiative in arranging the meeting.

Diesel Multiple Unit Main Line Expresses.   For the information of the Diesel Committee the Chairman referred to these proposed trains which would run between Derby, Leicester, Nottingham and St.Pancras, and said that these trains, which will be 400' long, will be serviced at Derby where they will be stabled overnight.

The Chairman requested that the servicing of these trains at Derby be borne in mind by the members of the Committee when they meet at Derby on the questions of whether the new shed should be at Etches Park or in the Locomotive Works.

2. Representation of Chief Civil Engineer on Maintenance Sub-Committee.

Noted that Mr. M'Ilmoyle will, in future, represent the Chief Civil Engineer on the Maintenance Sub-Committee.

3. Report on "Planning a Diesel Multiple Depot".

Noted and agreed to be a very good guide in the future construction of maintenance depots. Various members of the Comittee raised points of detail regarding their own particular departmental spheres and it was agreed that information should be sought as to whom the report is to be distributed and by which B.T.C. Committee it will be considered.

1. Manchester Part 1.

Mr. Gould's letter of 30th May considered and agreed that there be a like for like conversion of the existing steam services on the Styal Line and the Manchester to Crewe via Stockport line to diesel light weight trains pending electrification of those sections, when an improved service will be given.
