Proposed pruning during winter - still under consideration by Director of Traffic Services and Cumberland Motor Services Ltd.
An extension of this scheme should have commenced on 3rd February but owing to a defect being found in a 3-car unit built by the Birmingham Carriage & Wagon Co. it was necessary for 49 of these units to be taken out of service. The extension to the Manchester Part 1 scheme was postponed and to maintain existing services, units were withdrawn from other schemes and also some were loaned by the N.E. Region.
The defect in the units has now been dealt with and the postponed service was put into operation on March 3rd and normal diesel working resumed on other services.
Services commenced January 6th with six 2-car units, later increased to nine to cover peak loadings. The question was raised regarding the possible permanent retention of the additional units and Mr. Gould said the possibility of reverting to steam haulage during peak periods was being investigated in order to reduce the number of diesel units required.
