Here are a selection of British Railways images taken to record the new vehicles and for publicity purposes.
Negative 5CR/111
A wooden mock-up of a Trans-Pennine front end. Different placements of the four-character headcode were tried and photographer. Taken in the body shop on 1/1/59. Notice how the side gutter bends down as it reaches the front, this would be changed on the final design.
Negative 5C/315
Two DMCs under construction on 9/4/60. It clearly shows the moulded polyester resin cab front. The vehicle on the left has had the guttering on the cab fitted, and inside the hardwood timber framework has been fitted to the steel framework of the bodyshell, to which the body panels would be attached.
Negative 5CR/206
The first class smoking saloon in DMC E51952, which had fifteen seats. The same pattern of moquette had been used on the Ayrshire Class 126 DMUs. Through the swing door was a small non-smoking first class area with six seats. Dated 7th April 1960.
Negative 5CR/195?
The seating area in the buffet car. There are two versions of this, slightly different angles. In this version the loose chairs are aligned straight and more is seen of the shelf tables on the wall. One of these images should be negative 5CR/195 showing 59774 on 28/6/60.
Negative 5CR/195?
The second version where the chairs are not straight, perhaps to show that they are not fixed?
Negative 5CR/?
The second class saloon in DMC E51952 on 7/4/60. All the seating in this saloon is 'airline' style — all facing the same direction. There were three interior images taken in second class, so this is either negative 5CR/208 or 209 or 210.
Negative 5C/315
The inside of a cab during construction on 9/4/60. It shows the polyester resin cab front - one wonders if their was any structural steel added to protect the driver in the event of an accident? On the steel floor (formed of corrugated 'key sheeting') can be seen the brackets to which will be attached the rear cab bulkhead. In the steel plate at the front of the floor the black rectangular object is an outlet for the heater ducting.
Negative MT/95
Brand new Trailer First Buffet E59774. On the underframe is a paint date of 8-6-60 and a varnish date of 11-6-60. It would be allocated new to Neville Hill on 6-7-60. Note that the vacuum bags still have to be fitted.
Negative MT/101
Brand new DMBC E51951. On the underframe is a paint date of 19-4-60 and a varnish date of 22-4-60. It would be allocated new to Neville Hill on 6-7-60.
Unusual for the MT series of images is the lack of a matted white background.
A brand new set with E51951 closest, presumably with 51968 + 59774 + 59765 + 51969 + 51952. The location seems to be Neville Hill depot where they were first allocated.
A buffet car 'in use' using posed models. They shared an identical buffet area layout with the 1963 Inter-City DMUs.
