Commonly called Met-Camm "Lightweights" yet they were no different in construction materials from the later Met-Camm vehicles.
72 cars were built forming 36 power trailer sets. Seven sets were for the LMR to be used mainly on Bury - Bacup services, the remainder for the ER for East Anglian use.
Being a non-standard coupling code, their incompatibility meant an early withdrawal, by 1969. Two vehicles saw some further use at the Railway Technical Centre in Derby. None survive.
