End of Days. Swindon DMSL Sc51017 and 126 406 ticking over at Ayr station. It is sitting in the Bay Platforms, probably having arrived on a working from Glasgow Central. The Station Hotel dominates the background, whilst the through platforms to Girvan and Stranraer are off camera to the left. Probably summer 1982. alicia hartman.
End of Days. The last two Swindon Inter-City Sets are ticking over in Kyle Street Sidings. 126 406 (Sc51017) is nearest the camera and the rear set will be 126 413. Probably a Sunday in Autumn 1982 as the light fades on a dreich afternoon. alicia hartman.
Sc51036 in Kyle Street sidings (behind Ayr station) in August 1982. At this time the class had gone past their BR "sell by" date and almost all of the class lay out of use. 126 406 and 413 (behind) were both withdrawn and reinstated 8/82 and became the only two sets to survive past the end of the month, remaining in service until January of the following year. (Panoramic composite of previously submitted image). Andrew McConnell.

Class 126 Hunterston 9 Oct 1982. This tour ("Ayrshire Wanderer") was organised by the Swindon Preservation Society and used the same name as the previous year's BLS tour doing exactly what it said on the headboard. The class also remained in service for a bit longer than planned after the tour which had meant to see them being withdrawn from service the following day. Here we see two Class 126 driving cabs coupled together at Hunterston Ore Terminal. 51043 is on the left and 51036 on the right. Alistair Ness.
Class 101 & 126 Largs 9 Oct 1982. The Class 126 (formed 51036/59411/51017 + 51026/59404/51043) was on the 'Ayrshire Wanderer' railtour. This tour was organised by the Swindon Preservation Society and used the same name as the previous year's BLS tour doing exactly what it said on the headboard. 126 406 has just passed Elderslie No2 Signal Box and is crossing the flyunder for the Kilmacolm Branch (the truncated G&SWR main line to Greenock Princes Pier). The unit would have hit top speed along this section and would shortly after have the brakes applied hard for the stop at Johnstone. The short, 7 minute journey from Paisley to Johnstone was one of my favourite regular DMU trips. Photo taken at the very end of Class 126 operation - probably end of November 1982. The Kilmacolm line was closed in January 1983. Andrew McConnell.
A class 126 d.m.u. northbound on the Troon avoiding line at Troon on 27-11-82. Image by A. Wilson. For nearly 25 years, these B.R. Swindon built units were the mainstay of the routes from Glasgow to Ayrshire. This view shows a train probably from Stranraer to Glasgow avoiding the Troon stop on the loop line. This was the original main line and was superseded in 1892 when the loop was built, bringing the passenger station into the town. This avoiding line closed the day after this, on 28-11-1982, in preparation for re-signalling and electrification. Here, the old line has been integrated into the Fullarton golf course, and a footpath runs along the old trackbed. Gordon Thomson.
