On September 9, 1978, British Rail Eastern Region organised a return trip from Darlington to Eastgate, as far as one could reach on the Bishop Auckland to Wearhead line, and which had lost its passenger service in 1953. The trip was marketed as the "Rail Journey into Yesteryear". Part of this line is now operated as the Weardale Railway. The Metro-Cammell 4-car set was formed 50182 + 59068 + 59113 + 50171, and is seen at Eastgate.
