A six-car Met-Camm formation emerges from Grosmont Tunnel with the 1.20pm Goathland-Whitby service on 1 August 1958. Both sets are former four-car sets reduced to three-cars with the removal of the TSL. E50182 leads - note the number on the lamp bracket under the driver which seems to read 39 - these were common on NER sets at the time - a diagram or set number? The very rear car is E50749. Class 101 DMU at Eastgate

9th September 1978

On September 9, 1978, British Rail Eastern Region organised a return trip from Darlington to Eastgate, as far as one could reach on the Bishop Auckland to Wearhead line, and which had lost its passenger service in 1953. The trip was marketed as the "Rail Journey into Yesteryear". Part of this line is now operated as the Weardale Railway. The Metro-Cammell 4-car set was formed 50182 + 59068 + 59113 + 50171, and is seen at Eastgate. Jeremy Chapter.

At 12:35 on 4 November 1978 Darlington station has a two two-car Class 101 formation just arrived from Bishop Auckland on the left, on the right is the 12:42 to Bishop Auckland. This is formed of a four-car set (E50182 closest and E50142 on the rear). Michael Mensing.

On 31/08/1975, a Class 101 formation (visible being 56398 + 51219 / 56072 + 50217 / 50182) is seen at Shildon forming a shuttle between there and Darlington. The occasion was the 150th Anniversary of the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway. There was a procession of steam and diesel locomotives running from Shildon Works yard to Aycliffe and on to Darlington. Graeme Phillips Collection.
