Class 101 Metro-Cammell diesel units had not, I think, been allocated to Reading until a batch was acquired to replaced Gloucester RC&W class 119 sets which had in turn replaced Southern DEMUs (the Tadpole units) at the beginning of the 1980s (although ex-Hastings DEMUs would also work on the Tonbridge - Redhill service). Here L835 (presumably 51498 + 59530 + 51432) is seen at Tonbridge on May 20, 1988.
