Class 101 Metro-Cammell diesel units had not, I think, been allocated to Reading until a batch was acquired to replaced Gloucester RC&W class 119 sets which had in turn replaced Southern DEMUs (the Tadpole units) at the beginning of the 1980s (although ex-Hastings DEMUs would also work on the Tonbridge - Redhill service). Despite the number of trains on the GWR from Paddington to Didcot in 1993 it was quite unusual to take a passing shot of two sets in the right place unless the one on the relief line was standing at a signal. On 7 May 1993 class 101 set L835 (presumably 51498 + 59530 + 51432) was working a Paddington to Oxford or Banbury train as it was passed by a down HST at full line speed in Moreton Cutting.
