An unusual sight at Tiverton Junction on the section of the West of England mainline was a class 101 dmu (set B812, presumably 51462 + 59530 + 51530) with a SO Bristol Temple Meads to Paignton service on 10/5/1980. The set had been used for part of the BLS 'South Devon' railtour that day. Stephen Burdett.
Class 101 set B812 consisting of W51462 + W59530 + W51530 at Bristol Temple Meads on 09/04/1981. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Met-Cam class 101, set B812 (W51462 closest, presumably with W59530 + W51530) standing in the station at Worcester Shrub Hill. 17th April 1981. Paul James.
Class 101 DMU set B812 (51462 and presumably 59530 + 51530) seen at Gloucester possibly with a Cheltenham-Cardiff Central service on 31 May 1981. Robert Thomas.
Class 101 set B812 (presumably 51462 + 59530 + 51530) passes Limpley Stoke on the 22nd April 1981. Steve Davies Collection.
A Class 120 hybrid set with a Class 101 centre car (M53673 + M59530 + M53724) entering Shrewsbury on the 21st April 1985. It's working the 15:00 from Wolverhampton. Hamish Stevenson.
A hybrid three-car DMU with Class 108 Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M51928 leading, had a Class 101 Trailer Car (presumably 59530) inserted between it and the rear Class 108 car (presumably 52044), forming a well-filled Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service at Leyland on May 23rd 1986. Martyn Hilbert.
Seen calling at Oxford in 1988 is Metro Cammell Class 101 3-car unit L835, 51432 closest presumably with 59530 + 51498. Bob Belcher.
The 1114 Maidenhead - Paddington stopping service rolls into Langley Station formed of yet another hybrid DMU. This is a a pair of GRCW Class 119 driving vehicles coupled with a Met-Cam Class 101 centre trailer all running as Reading Set L574. The formation being W51095+W59530+W51056 .... It is interesting to note that the leading vehicle W51095 was running with set L581 until August last year, giving a reason for the misplaced set No on the front end ...... 17th February 1988. Nigel Mack.
Class 101 Metro-Cammell diesel units had not, I think, been allocated to Reading until a batch was acquired to replaced Gloucester RC&W class 119 sets which had in turn replaced Southern DEMUs (the Tadpole units) at the beginning of the 1980s (although ex-Hastings DEMUs would also work on the Tonbridge - Redhill service). Here L835 (presumably 51498 + 59530 + 51432) is seen at Tonbridge on May 20, 1988. Jeremy Chapter.
Class 101 set L835 - 51498 + 59530 + 51432 - at Salfords (near Gatwick) on 1 June 1988. Keith Miller.
Class 101 DMU set L835 (presumably 51498 + 59530 + 51432) arrives into Betchworth station in February 1989. John Law.
A few hours spent watching a variety of DMU types by the North Downs in August 1989. Class 101 Metro Cammell set L835 (W51498 + W59530 + W51432) head west with a Reading bound service, seen near Betchworth. The power cars were Leeds / Bradford based most of their lives until late 1987, while the centre car spent most of its life around Tyneside then quite a few years in Scotland before migrating south. Murray Liston.

Despite the number of trains on the GWR from Paddington to Didcot in 1993 it was quite unusual to take a passing shot of two sets in the right place unless the one on the relief line was standing at a signal. On 7 May 1993 class 101 set L835 (presumably 51498 + 59530 + 51432) was working a Paddington to Oxford or Banbury train as it was passed by a down HST at full line speed in Moreton Cutting. Peter Tandy.
