Sadly I had very mixed weather for my Railrover tour of the West Country in 1979. Here, Dawlish Warren is covered in grey cloud as a stopping train to Exeter pulls up at the station on 2nd September. An interesting assortment of station buildings can be seen and one of them housed the South Devon Railway Museum which was always worth a visit. Set P464 is presumably 51306 + 59473 + 51321. On a warm Spring evening, a three-car Class 101 DMU with Driving Motor Brake Second 51219 leading, was departing from Dawlish with an all-stations 18.23 Exeter St Davids to Paignton service on May 31st 1989. This was the period when following the banishment of almost new Class 142 Skipper units to the North, still serviceable first generation DMU sets were drafted in to the West Country to keep services running, prior to the appearance of Class 150/2 and Class 155 Sprinter units. Coming out of the haze on a warm afternoon, A Swindon Class 120 three-car DMU was approaching Dawlish Warren with a Paignton to Exeter St Davids all-stations service on April 7th 1980. Martyn Hilbert.

A tidy looking three-car Class 101 DMU leaning into the curve as it departed from Dawlish with the 18.20 Exeter St Davids to Newton Abbot (all stations) service on a glorious Saturday evening, May 26th 1990. W51500 leads, the TBS should be W59093 and an unknown DMBS on the rear. This set was one of many Class 101 & 108 units sent to the West Country as a stop-gap following the transfer of the Devon & Cornwall Class 142 'Skipper' fleet to the North in 1988, and before the transfer of almost new Class 150/2 Sprinter units in 1992. While on holiday in South Devon in 1987 we noted this Class 118 DMU with set number P460 several times. Here it is departing Dawlish on 3 July 1987 working the 11.06 Paignton-Exeter St Davids. The unit was very distinctive in its yellow livery advertising British Telecom. The individual cars were 51317 / 59469 / 51302. Lewis Bevan.

On fine Spring evening, Plymouth Laira allocated Metro-Cammell Class 101 set number 827 formed of cars 53212, 59130 & 51223, was departing from the Down Loop at Dawlish Warren whilst working the 20.04 Exeter Central to Paignton all stations service (2C04) on June 1st 1990. Martyn Hilbert.
