A three-car Class 101/118 hybrid DMU running as Plymouth Laira set 826, was stood at Starcross with an Exeter St Davids to Paignton service on May 31st 1988. The outer driving cars were 51219 & 53223 with an UID Class 118 suburban centre trailer. Martyn Hilbert.
On a warm Spring evening, a three-car Class 101 DMU with Driving Motor Brake Second 51219 leading, was departing from Dawlish with an all-stations 18.23 Exeter St Davids to Paignton service on May 31st 1989. This was the period when following the banishment of almost new Class 142 Skipper units to the North, still serviceable first generation DMU sets were drafted in to the West Country to keep services running, prior to the appearance of Class 150/2 and Class 155 Sprinter units. Set 875 is a Class 101 (51219) / Class 108 hybrid when seen in Exeter St Davids on August 13, 1990. John Carter.
On 31/08/1975, a Class 101 formation (visible being 56398 + 51219 / 56072 + 50217 / 50182) is seen at Shildon forming a shuttle between there and Darlington. The occasion was the 150th Anniversary of the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway. There was a procession of steam and diesel locomotives running from Shildon Works yard to Aycliffe and on to Darlington. Graeme Phillips Collection.

On 02/06/1983, Class 101 cars E56054 E51219 E51247 E54406 stand in sidings within Darlington station. The vehicle nearest the camera still carries its original 56xxx number, but would be renumbered to 54xxx during 1983 as has already happened with the far vehicle and with most others in the series that year. It is also highly unlikely that the front saloon was still being used as first class accommodation by this date. Graeme Phillips Collection.

On 18 February 1984 Hertfordshire Railtours ran a railtour utilising a class 47 with eight Mk 1 carriages between London King's Cross and Darlington and a 7-car Met-Camm dmu formation (53244 + 59084 + 53149 and 53295 + 53150 and 53188 + 51219) thence to Redmire and Eastgate as "The Norseman 2". In this view an HR rep is either placing or removing the headboard from Class 101 DMC(L) 53244. Jeremy Chapter.
