For the Rocket 150 celebrations in 1980 a three day cavalcade was held along the historic Liverpool & Manchester route between Bold Colliery and Rainhill station on May 24-26th 1980, when a procession of locomotives and rolling stock, entertained the crowds. To get the punters to and from Rainhill a motley collection of DMU sets was drafted in to form shuttle services from Manchester Victoria. Ignored by many in favour of the more exotic motive power on offer that day, a six-car lash up comprising of a Class 100 (DMBS M50350 leading), a Class 104 and a Class 108, was approaching Rainhill with another load of eager and expectant punters. Prior to the Rocket 150 cavalcade at Rainhill on May 26th 1980 and with spectators getting into position for the main event, an 8-Car Class 115 Suburban DMU pairing was approaching Rainhill station with one of the many shuttle services running from Manchester Victoria. Driving Motor Brake Second M51677 in refurbished livery was bringing up the rear, the other vehicles in its four-car set still carrying Rail Blue, whilst in the leading set, three cars were in refurbished colours with one intermediate car in Rail Blue. Following the final day of the three-day Rocket 150 Cavalcade at Rainhill on Monday 26th May 1980, and with the crowds gone, an 8-Car DMU lash-up on one of the frequent shuttle services from Manchester Victoria, consisting of a Class 115 suburban set an a pair of two-car Class 108's, were passing one of the grandstands being prepared for dismantling. The leading car was Rail Blue liveried Class 115 Driving Motor Brake Second M51860. Following the end of the three day 'Rocket 150' cavalcade event at Rainhill on Monday evening May 26th 1980, the Army Cadets had been enlisted for the big clear up of the grandstands that had been erected alongside track, with the fruits of their endeavours in the black bin-liners visible at the base of the nearest grandstand. Despite the exotic motive power that had graced the event over the three days, one highlight that was generally ignored, was the spectacle of the frequent DMU shuttle services to and from Manchester Victoria that ran before and after the cavalcade. The shuttles utilised a mixed-bag of DMU's including some borrowed from other parts of the BR network. In this view, a six-car BRCW DMU formation made up of a pair of Buxton Depot three-car 104's, with Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M50423 leading, was approaching Rainhill having run ECS from Manchester.
