977047, the only Class 103 to be used as a Sandite car, is seen at Wigan Springs Branch on the 22nd September 1984. Note the missing vacuum bag, and 'Sandite Vehicle' written on the bodyside. Paul Moxon.
Vehicle: 51903 Set: LO286
By the date of this picture, Saturday April 26 1992, LO286 (51903 + 54267) was one of the few remaining first generation DMUs left working in the north west. It departs from Wigan Wallgate with the 12:04 Wigan Wallgate-Manchester. The trailer car was notable for still retaining tungsten lighting. Mel Holley.

Displaying the headcode 6Z08, Ultrasonic Test Train DB975007 - DB975008 arrives at the south end of platform 6 at Wigan North Western, 6th July 1985. Built in 1955 the unit had been converted to departmental use 15 years earlier and would eventually be secured for preservation after final withdrawal in 1994. S Gaskell.

A 2-car Class 108 leaves platform 3 at Wigan North Western with a stopping service to Liverpool Lime Street in April 1983, led by Allerton allocated DMCL no. M51568. This vehicle was preserved following withdrawal from main line service in 1993. S Gaskell.

At Springs Branch on the left the distinctive Class 103 design of sandite vehicle 977047 can be seen, while on the right 40001 is at the far end of the former steam shed buffered with another class 40. A close up of the bodyside number on M53467 shows evidence of its renumbering from M50467 in July 1983. I had ridden on this 2-car set during a visit to Manchester on 28th January 1984. Taken at Springs Branch in June 1985. S Gaskell.
The data panel on a Liverpool bound seen at Wigan North Western DMU shows that it's a Class 108 Driving Motor Brake Second. DQ212 is the design code for that type of vehicle and it has 52 2nd class seats. It was last shopped for a C3 exam on 7th August 1981 at works code 5458, which was Doncaster Works Carriage Shops, and would be due for shopping again in February 1984. The LW beneath simply indicates it was a lightweight vehicle. March 1982. S Gaskell.

A dull, grey and wet morning on platform 2 at Wigan Wallgate sees Class 104 53535 at the front of the 10.00 departure for Kirkby. This 1958 vintage car was by then showing its age but it lasted in service until February 1986, before being scrapped almost immediately. 20th October 1984. S Gaskell.
