DMU thrill at Rhyl. On 3rd June 1978 BR ran a Mystex from Edinburgh to Rhyl, a change from the usual destinations of Blackpool or Southport. At Rhyl I took this Instamatic shot of a DMU, with a Gloucester Cross Country class 119 substituting for one of the Park Royal class 103 cars. Murray Liston.
A mixed formation of (mostly) Class 101 Metro Cammell DMU vehicles but led by a Class 103 (Park Royal) vehicle seen near Cosford with a Wolverhampton bound service in July or August 1978. Bob Belcher.
Hooton on the 28th of July 1978. Class 103 Park Royal DMU has either just worked or is about to work the 2F73 service. The dmu is heading for Helsby but although we frequently travelled from Chester to Rock Ferry in the 70's I can't remember if the Helsby services started from Rock Ferry at the time or just ran from Hooton. I certainly remember rattling along the North Wales cost on Chester Park Royals many a time. The KDH Archive.
A Class 103 DMU at Holyhead on 23/08/1978. The Class 103s had a career spanning some 25 years, which is surprising considering they were considered non-standard in terms of their bodywork construction, which gave trouble in later years. They tended to be concentrated on services along the border counties between England and Wales, as well as Wales. Graeme Phillips Collection.

A Class 103 Park Royal DMU on the rear of a Shrewsbury and Crewe service departing Welshpool, 17-4-81. On Tour With the Class 13 Army.
The date was 4th July 1981, a typical North Wales bash. We would start around Chester and work towards Llandudno Junction timing the moves to catch the class 40s and miss the dreaded duffs, on this overcast day we had reached Llandudno Junction in mid afternoon. I took this under the concrete bridge that carries the Holyhead Road, a 24mm lens on an Olympus OM1. The train is a Llandudno to Manchester with a mixture of types, a 103 and a 108, on Summer Saturdays anything that could stagger out and back would be used to move the crowds. The cars are typical of the sort that gricers used, cheap and tatty but still with life in them. They would be thrashed from one end of the country to the other until they broke, their insides were always full of food remains, cigarette packets and empty bottles. These cars were often seen at photo stops, their doors left open either because time was tight or to save time getting inside for the blast to the next location. Happy Days. Geoff Dowling.
