"Bold departure from convention at Oxford Rd station, Manchester". Taken from an article on the Manchester - Crewe AC electrification and modernisation that appeared in the October 1960 British Transport Commission magazine "Transport Age" and highlighting this important scheme that helped lay the foundation for much of the later electrification and modernisation work undertaken by British Railways. As part of this work the station of the south side of Manchester city centre, at Oxford Road, was reconstructed using a very contemporary architectural style with the old buildings replaced by the current largely timber structure by architects W.R. Headley and Max Glendinning and structural engineer Hugh Tottenham. It is now Grade 2 Listed and is seen here with both overhead wires and a BRC&W DMU. Scan and notes courtesy of Mike Ashworth. British Railways.
Night maintenance in Neville Hill depot. A fitter adjusts the tappets on a Leyland 680 engine. Note the lamp socket on the engine start/stop controls being used. The worksplate on the solebar tells us this is a BRC&W vehicle from lot 30404 - a DMBS from a batch of five driving trailer sets built for the North Eastern Region. Of the five DMBSs only two were allocated to the depot in this era: 50594 and 50598. This image appeared on the rear cover of the 17th edition of the British Transport Commission's Transport Age magazine dated April 1961. British Railways.

A two-car BRC&W set changes lines as it departs from Kenilworth station on 1 October 1961. The rear vehicle is DTCL M56184. Michael Mensing.

No details with this slide. It shows a four-car DMU - three BRC&W vehicles and a Met-Camm TBSL - so probably on the North Eastern Region, circa mid-1960s. Stuart Mackay Collection.

The DMCL has Cresswell on the destination blind, this was where the four mile branch joined the Crewe - Derby main line. Stuart Mackay Collection.
