A rather dark photograph taken on a rather dark January day at 16.55hrs and certainly on a dark day for the railways in the area too. A Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon built class 104 and a Derby class 108 dmu stands at Hayfield station, situated at the end of the 2.5 mile branch from New Mills Central on the penultimate day of railway operations, 3rd January 1970. The track bed is now know as the popular Sett Valley Trail. Andrew J Crowther.
DMU cars M50536 and M56179 wait to form the 16.41 to Stalybridge in a bay at Stockport on 7 September 1975. I seem to remember the service was occasional even in these days, but of course it was reduced to just one service a week as a means of avoiding the closure procedure. Jeremy Chapter.

Class 104 set N662 (presumably 53431 + 53512) sits in the sidings at Southport on October 1st 1988 as 47 557 departs with vintage VSOE Pullman stock heading for Folkestone and a four-day break in Paris. Martyn Hilbert.
With a BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53431 & M53512 (N662) stabled in the sidings, Class 150/2 150 211 was departing from Southport with a service for Manchester Victoria on October 1st 1988. 150 211 was one of the batch of 'odd' numbered 150/2's that went new to Newton Heath in 1986/87. A two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53512 & M53431 (N662) was stood at the North end of platform 6 at Preston ready to work ECS back to its home depot at Newton Heath on the evening of April 1st 1989. The cars had been long-term residents of Newton Heath, but four months after this image was recorded, the set was transferred to Chester Depot and given the set number CH606. Both cars were withdrawn from service in 1990. Martyn Hilbert.

Newton Heath TMD allocated Class 104 set No. N664 formed of Class 104 DMBS M53442 and DMCL M53516 along with Class 108 set No. N608 formed of DMBS M50978 and DTCL M54261 await departure time from Manchester Victoria Station with an afternoon service to Southport on the 29th March 1989. All four vehicles would be scrapped within two and a half years. Bob Woolnough.
