A Class 104 BRCW twin approaches Preston with the empty stock of the 15:38 Preston to Ormskirk service on Friday 3rd June 1983. The leading vehicle is M53428 is a Driving Motor Brake 2nd originally numbered M50428 but renumbered into the M53xxx series to avoid duplication of numbers. Ormskirk had once been an intermediate station on the main line from Liverpool Exchange to Preston and the north. Electric services were extended from Liverpool as far as Ormskirk in 1913. However, following the re-routing of all long distance services to and from the north into Lime Street, an enforced change of trains at Ormskirk became the norm. Brian McDevitt.

The reason I took this at the time is because it was the only BRC&W vehicle, definitely in the Northwest, that still retained its original two-figure route indicator which necessitated the use of a tail lamp, as seen here. The rear blind on BX482 shows 'Manchester' and an old notebook suggests this is actually a Footex for Carlisle Utd v Man City. On the left, M50483, M59139 & M50431 (nearest) head toward Piccadilly whilst on the right M50423 (nearest), M59135 & M50427 are bound for Whaley Bridge as they approach the platform at Stockport. A freshly painted Class 104 (with roof vents removed) leads a six-car DMU formation past Falsgrave signal box into Scarborough on Saturday 23 July 1983. The vehicles are M53431 + M59137 + M53496 / M53424 + M59207 + M53434. Note the 1Z11 in the centre cab window, this is thought to be a BR merrymaker from Buxton. Brian Daniels.
