104 DMU

15th September 1986

Kilwinning on the afternoon of 15/9/86 with a mixed cl.101/104 set (53210/59090/53598) leaving on the 16.09 to Glasgow (15.45 ex-Ayr). Note the mix of liveries on this Ayr set, which, typically for this time, is a real mish-mash of whatever the depot could cobble together. So, the leading DMBS in blue and grey is recently arrived from Hull, the class 101 trailer is in Strathclyde colours and the class 104 DMBS at the rear, a Newton Heath cast-off, is in plain blue. Leonard Rogers.

104 DMU

13th September 1980

In the days when the Coast Line from Kirkham to Blackpool South was still a double track railway, a Class 104 2-Car DMU with M56175 leading, calls at a run-down looking Lytham Station on 13th September 1980 whilst working the Kirkham to Blackpool South shuttle service. A far-cry from the days when this line was busy with express, residential and excursion traffic, how on earth in the smart and tidy town of Lytham was the station allowed to wither away like this. Worse was to follow - in 1983 the Coast Line was reduced to single track. Martyn Hilbert.

104 DMU

28th September 1985

As part of a joint BR/Steamport open day on September 28th 1985, a shuttle service from Southport station to the Steamport Museum at the former loco depot in Derby Road, was provided using a 2-Car Class 104 formed of cars M54175 & M53469. This was the view from Windsor Road footbridge, as having run from Southport station, and following a reversal in the headshunt alongside the former St Lukes station visible in the background, the 104 was running onto the access siding into Steamport. Martyn Hilbert.

The two-car DMU is running between the occupation crossings at Naptha Lane and Lodge Lane, the then full-height chimney at the former Moss's Cotton Mill in Lostock Hall is prominent in this flat landscape. Closest is DTSL M56176 working with DMBS M50535. Martyn Hilbert.

October 1963

A BRC&W driver trailer set departs from Sutton Park in October 1963. M56177 leads, presumably with long-term (and original) partner M50534. "2G" is painted on the bufferbeam the code for Ryecroft depot, a new code issued the previous month replacing 21F. Another recent change was the moving of the electrification warning flash from the lower cab to the window (instruction issued in September 1962). Note the roof colour, a much lighter colour than the cab dome. This image appeared in the 1970 DMU ABC. Michael Mensing.

Bedford St Johns was once on the Oxford to Cambridge line. By 10 June 1982 it was clearly underused and hardly providing a service to passengers, being a distance from the town centre. Two years later, passenger services from Bletchley were diverted to Bedford Midland permitting interchange with the Midland Main Line. The BRCW class 104 dmu is formed 56177/50534. Jeremy Chapter.
